Austin got sick, Oct. 27, 2009
Austin and his mother, Heather were flown to Ohio Oct. 31, 2009
when Austin had both of his arms and legs amputated due to complications from a rare form of bacterial meningitis. In Austin’s case, it invaded his blood, creating an emergency called meningococcemia. That triggered multiple microscopic blood clots along with bleeding inside his skin. A rash grew and his skin turned dark. Within a few hours, specialists knew Austin
would face amputations.
